HAIR SALON BURROW
This hair salon is located on the second floor of a mixed-use building in downtown Sapporo. The design was guided by two key objectives:
To create a workspace—an atelier—that serves as a stage for skilled hairstylists to refine and express their craft.
To establish a cultural hub—a salon—for artists, designers, and independent shops based in Sapporo to connect and share their work.
As a salon with confidence in its technical expertise, the goal was to design a space that is both highly functional and free of unnecessary elements, while simultaneously integrating the openness and exchange characteristic of a salon.
The space features a deep floor plan with a large window at the far end, offering a view of the street. To preserve this openness, styling stations are arranged in a row along the lengthwise walls at even intervals. The spacing between them serves as a necessary buffer to maintain guests’ sense of privacy. These gaps are subtly deepened to accommodate crisp white display walls and pedestals, reinforcing the salon’s role as an exhibition space. These elements also act as soft, diffused light sources that illuminate guests' faces and provide an optimal layout for essential tools such as electrical outlets and hairdryers.
Rather than being confined to the back of the house, the color-mixing area is brought to the forefront as a U-shaped counter. This process is inherently suited to an atelier, and positioning it in the main space allows stylists to remain visually connected to their guests while working.
The shampoo area is enclosed by walls cut at an angle—designed to block guests' lines of sight from one another while ensuring an unobstructed view for the stylists. The result is a structure that subtly evokes the presence of an iceberg.
All these distinct elements are brought together through a carefully layered composition of subtly varied whites and light grays. This nuanced palette allows the atelier and salon to coexist seamlessly. The space, stripped of excess color, also serves as a thoughtful backdrop for hairstylists who specialize in delicate, precise color work.
